Brussels Airlines may fly to the US

May 24th, 2011

Brussels Airlines confirmed it wants to launch flights from Brussels to the US, but stressed the plans are conditional on obtaining transatlantic antitrust immunity (ATI) with its Star Alliance partners and inclusion in their Atlantic Plus-Plus joint venture (JV).

Brussels Airlines A319

A company source, however, told ATW that the carrier hopes to be included in the JV by year-end and possibly launch its first service to the US in the next IATA summer schedule, pointing out that New York JFK is not currently served directly from Brussels by any Star carriers. United Airlines has flights from Washington Dulles to Brussels and from Chicago to Brussels; Continental flies from New York Newark to Brussels and US Airways – which is not part of the JV – has flights from Philadelphia to Brussels.

“Our CEOs have repeatedly stated that we want to expand our long-haul network in the near future to other continents besides Africa; North America is one of the possibilities,” said VP-Communications Geert Sciot, acknowledging that “one of the conditions to start operating flights to the US on our metal is the ATI with our Star partners.”

Fuel prices will sharply reduce flights across the Atlantic

May 20th, 2011

Delta Air Lines, Air France-KLM and Alitalia will sharply reduce flights across the Atlantic starting this fall, after airlines added too many flights on those routes just as fuel prices shot up.

United States/European Union map

The change will leave travelers between the U.S. and Europe with fewer choices. Delta began adding more trans-Atlantic flying toward the end of 2010. In November it announced new flights from Boston to London and flights from Miami to London, as well as additional flights from New York to Paris and flights from Seattle to Amsterdam, among others.

Delta and its partners said they will cut flying capacity by seven percent to nine percent starting this fall. The reduction means that the amount of flying they do will drop about 15 percentage points compared to the growth they had planned previously, Delta President Ed Bastian said on Thursday.
